What is a Homeopathic Remedy?

Updated: Apr 3, 2022

One of the top questions I get when treating a new patient is "What's in this??". The other question is "You're giving me WHAT??" because they have gone home and googled the remedy. Homeopathic Remedies are a big part of why I love homeopathy and I think understanding them is where we need to focus to really understand homeopathy.

So let's start with the basics: the History of Homeopathy.

The art and cure of Homeopathy began over 200 years, originating with Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. While translating medical texts, he discovered that Cinchona Bark, which was used to treat Malaria, was capable of causing the symptoms of Malaria in a healthy person. Through his own experiments, he found that when the healthy person stopped taking the Cinchona, the symptoms disappeared. For example: An onion (Allium Cepa) that causes our eyes to tear up and burn, can be used for allergies. Hahnemann dubbed this the "Law of Similars" or "like cures like".

When Hahnemann began exploring the Law of Similars with different substances, he identified pictures of what a remedy could cure, based on what it could cause. These remedy pictures would include Mental, Physical, and Emotional symptoms; which would then become the template for prescribing remedies. For example: a patient with burning, watery eyes, a runny nose, who improves with washing the hands and face, would be prescribed Allium Cepa.

Unfortunately, Hahnemann found that using crude substances (in their purest form) produced side effects when administered so he began experimenting with smaller and smaller doses. He eventually found a process called "potentization" that involved diluting and sucussing (shaking rapidly) substances until they held only the energetic properties of the original crude substance. The dilution eliminated the side effects, producing a more gentle treatment, while the sucussion produced a deeper and more long lasting healing effect by acting on the energy of the body.

So what is in a Homeopathic Remedy?

A homeopathic remedy contains all the original energy and "fingerprint" of a substance, without all the side effects. Some call it water memory, but the science is still being discovered. What it does for healing though - is it gives the body the nudge it needs to heal itself. At the end of the day we get less aggravation and more gentle healing.

If you were to google the remedy I prescribe you, you would see a whole bunch of symptoms; many that you don't relate to! Fear not, I'm matching you to the remedy that is closest to your symptom picture. The remedy I give will match the symptoms you have as best it can and will stimulate the symptoms that are active in you - the rest will be white noise; almost as though the body can't hear them because they don't relate.

Why does this work? The body seems to get used to illness over time and forgets how to resolve those headaches or that joint pain on its own. So the matching remedy comes in and sings those aches a little louder, almost like a new intruder in the system, and then body is woken up: "Ah, yes! This is how I need to respond!"

What nudge does your body need? Do you have symptoms that your body is forgetting how to heal?
